Does “Buy Me a Coffee” Really Work or Am I Just Doing It Wrong?

2 min readJan 7, 2025

I’ve been using Buy Me a Coffee for over a year now, and to be honest… I’m not sure if it’s working, or if I just don’t know how to make it work.

When I first set it up, the idea felt simple and exciting — create content, let people support you with small donations, and boom! Passive income, right? But here I am, months later, wondering if I’m the only one still waiting for that “boom” moment.

Don’t get me wrong — Buy Me a Coffee is a great platform. It’s easy to use, clean, and makes tipping creators feel personal and fun. But the truth is, platforms like this don’t automatically bring in supporters. It’s more like having a tip jar at a café. Sure, people might drop something in, but only if:

  1. They know it’s there.
  2. They feel like the service or content is worth it.
  3. You ask or remind them (without feeling like you’re begging).

And honestly, number 3 is tricky. As a creative, there’s that awkward feeling of promoting yourself. I’ve always leaned toward letting my work “speak for itself,” but sometimes silence is all you hear back.

So here I am — wondering if I need to rethink my approach. Maybe I need to market the link more. Maybe I need to offer more exclusive content. Or maybe, I just need to accept that Buy Me a Coffee isn’t a magic bullet, but rather a small piece of the larger puzzle.

If you want to support or just check out how I’m doing with it, here’s my link: buymeacoffee.com/silentharmony.

If you’re using Buy Me a Coffee, how’s it going for you? Any tips or lessons learned along the way?
